​ReefLush

2024

ReefLush is an innovative marine restoration product designed to enhance coral immunity. Utilizing sodium alginate to encapsulate probiotics, ReefLush promotes coral health and supports reef ecosystem recovery. Corals face threats from climate change, pollution, and disease, and ReefLush offers a science-based solution to strengthen their natural defenses. Sodium alginate's natural film-forming properties allow for gradual probiotic release, providing sustained health benefits. Easy to apply, ReefLush is ideal for conservation organizations. By enhancing coral resilience, ReefLush aims to contribute to protecting and restoring coral reefs, ensuring the sustainability of these vital marine habitats.

Coral reefs have been on Earth for 500 million years and although they occupy less than 1% of the ocean floor they harbors at least 40% of all known marine species.They are the most biologically diverse and valuable ecosystems on our planet.​

If the environmental stresses continue to increase, corals could become completely extinct by around 2050

The death of corals is not only a loss of biodiversity but also leads to the decline of fisheries, reduced shoreline protection, heightened climate impacts, and limitations on pharmaceutical research.

In order for the CoralProbiCarrier to deliver probiotics more accurately, I wanted to design the shape of the carrier with reference to other organisms that live around corals. It will comes in different forms, each tailored to suit various types of corals. For example, the form of CoralProbiCarrier in the middle is inspired by the spiral shape of shark eggs, ensures that the carrier can be securely fixed on staghorn coral, providing stability and enhancing the effectiveness of the probiotic delivery system.

For the inner layer, I selected a mixture of calcium carbonate and gelatin to achieve a more defined shape.

Inner layer material containing trace elements and minerals that provide continuous benefits to the coral and its surrounding ecosystem.

The outer layer will be coated with sodium alginate, encapsulating the probiotics, and then set using a 10% calcium chloride solution

Sodium alginate has a rapid dissolution time, allowing the CoralProbiCarrier to quickly interact with the coral when placed on the reef. Meanwhile, the remaining core continues to release nutrients, benefiting surrounding organisms and the broader ecosystem.

​Stage 1

The product consists of two layers designed to enhance coral health and support the surrounding ecosystem.

The outer layer is composed of sodium alginate combined with probiotics, which boosts the coral's immune system.

Once the sodium alginate-probiotic layer is fully dissolved, it reveals the inner core containing trace elements and minerals that provide continuous benefits to the coral and its surrounding ecosystem.

Places the product in the coral reef. Need to make sure that the product will not slip off easily.

The user needs to pull out the product shelf from the package and bring it underwater.
